HOORAY FOR AFRAY!

January 18th, 2012 by Tom

BMX is for suckers, I am quitting to become a rapper! As you can clearly see from the title of this post, I am a master of rhyming, so look out world , “Rhyme Master Boom Boom Boorman” is coming at you with some heat from the streets!

Moving along, if those last two sentences did not make you a little bit sick in your stomach then I applaud you.

Today has been a great day here in the store, not only have I got my future as a rapper all figured out, but we also received our very first batch of goodies from legendary thread makers Afray! These dudes have been putting in millions of hours re developing their brand and it shows, this stuff is fresh dawg! To get the ball rolling for what is set to be a fantastic relationship between Hell On Wheels and Afray, we got in a small run of clean, crisp tees and the staple part of BMX fashion that is known as the snapback.

The Monogram and Leatherbound snaps are looking amazing and are ready to cover your sweet do for only $44.95.

Tees in all sizes, no need for disguises! Man I am good at this rap thing. These tees are printed an the highest quality cotton and are more than likely to get moved all the way to the front of your laundry cycle because you will want to wear them all the damn time. $44.95 is a small price to pay to look that good.

We could not be happier to stock and support another legit rider owned Aussie brand . In case you havent already seen it, here is their latest webclip from John Young. This really shows us what the brand is all about, and I absolutely lvee vibe these dudes are putting out. Check it before you wreck it………… oh well I guess my streak of flawless rapping and rhyming had to come to an end sometime.

TUESDAY!

January 17th, 2012 by Tom

It would appear that today is Tuesday! Not only that , but it is also Tuesday all freaking day long… Hoorrah! Tuesday marks the start of a new week in the shop for me, and after my massive weekend which consists of Monday and Monday alone, It feels good to get back into the swing of day to day shop life. Tuesdays are also my favourite week day for afternoon / evening riding, I dont know what it is but I always seem to have a good time on my bike on Tuesday evenings and tonight marks the beginning of the new year out at Liverpool BMX track. It has been a while since I got rad on my race bike and to celebrate my excitement of the prospect of doing just that, here are some classic pictures celebrating our Bicycle Motocross heritage. Enjoy these pics and enjoy the rest of your Tuesday. Man I love Tuesdays………. TUESDAY!!!

Tuesdays and BMX! What more could one ask for?

GOOD TIMES

January 17th, 2012 by Tom

This past weekend marked the 3rd annual Blake Butterfield memorial jam at Kempsey skatepark. Brodie and his crew of legendary rad lads work hard every year to make this happen and by the looks of things it was a smashing success. Good job there fella. Check out the little edit Brodie threw together to get a sense of how rad of a day it was. Fingerscrossed I will be able to make it up there for the next one. Get on!

VERY VIBRANT VIEWING

January 13th, 2012 by Tom

Fresh in time for the weekends activities, we have a stack of new DVD’s ready to entertain and amaze you! I don’t know about you but for me a new BMX DVD is possibly one of the greatest ways to pass the time when it is too dark, cold or even too hot out to actually ride your bike. Let me tell you all that these three fine examples Bicycle stunt riding caught on tape, are on par with some of the greats of our generation. Check out the trailers below if you dont believe me ……… go on ……. I dare you.

FBM “Thousand Yard Stare” -Defgrip Preview from FBM BMX on Vimeo.

S&M Q.P. DVD Volume #4 “Salt Lake Shake” – Intro/Trailer from S&M Bikes on Vimeo.

FBMs Thousand Yard Stare has been playing non stop in the store for 2 days now and I have no intentions of changing it for now, that says a lot about it, good old boys having loads of fun riding their bikes and goofing around! $25. Owned is a new concept from the legendary movie men of Props Visual and it is full of bangers. $29. S&Ms Salt Lake Shake is not the newest flick out but it is an instant classic and for only $10 you must be a little bit weird if you dont jump for joy at the thought of owning this for such a small amount of pennies.

BITTER SWEET

January 11th, 2012 by Tom

Today marks the retirement of my old faithful and much loved bike. The “Red Dragon” has been with me since April 2008 and has not let me down once. This Deluxe XL frame has been with we through some great sessions and some harsh crashes, it was upon this faithful steed that I was propelled face first into the concrete during the head injury plagued year of 2010. It is a sad thing to retire such a good piece of equipment, but changes need to happen eventually.

The replacement frame had been perched proudly upon my bench since a week before Christmas waiting for its time to be mated up with its bike part buddies. Another Deluxe frame was the obvious choice and the newer and slightly improved version of the dragon, the ” Tech 2″ was the frame I chose.

RAWWWWW!!! I had been planning this build in my head day after day as i saw the frame from the corner of my eye each day over the holiday period. The biggest plan I had for the build was to get rid of my red alloy spoke nipples as well as the black spokes and replace them with nice shiny silver ones for a touch of class. Since foolishly getting rid of it over 10 years ago, I have long lusted after another original Profile front hub to match my long serving and ever so classy rear hub. I had been running a more modern mini front hub, which has been great, but the fact that the hubs didnt quite match between front and rear had been bugging me for a while, ( I know, right what a freaking bike nerd!!!! ), after tracking down and receiving the masterpiece of a hub, I was ready to build. I re used the majority of parts from the Dragon as they are all rad and in perfect working order. I did however replace the old forks with a fresh set of S&M Pitchforks.

Pretty as a picture!

The new bike psych is currently in full effect and I am going to go as far as to say that I haven’t been this excited about a new bike since I was 15, I love that feeling ( more total and utter bike nerd action in effect once again ) and can not wait to take this machine out to the trails to break her in. But first the bike needs a name. The Red Dragon was a good name for a bike, but what to call this raw beauty? I dont know…….. maybe something like “Roger Raw face” ? This may take some time.

HELMETS FOR THE HOLIDAYS

January 6th, 2012 by Tom

If you ventured into the store over the Xmas period and were shopping for a noggin protector for yourself , you may have left a little disappointed. For some incredible reason helmets were a hot item for pre Xmas shoppers, this left us with a rather small variety of helmets left for those who got in a little late. The popular response from me when asked if we had any more stock was ” check back in the first or second week of Jan ” . This picture below is me staying true to my word and letting the world know that we have plenty of lids back in stock ready to do battle for your brain.

NEW YEAR………. NEW BIKE

January 6th, 2012 by Tom

That is the case for our man David deep Cee diver Cragglan. After discovering a crack in his old faithful Simple Lombric, it was time for a new frame. A very 90s inspired white red and chrome look seems to have gone over very well indeed. I like your style fella.

Dave has recently joined a local gang and has been busy hustlin up a storm on the mean streets of the inner west side.

Dave is still running his big bad perfect 10s and is sporting one of Trents finest saddles, mmmmmmm bad ass is the term we are all looking for here. If you see Dave flying around a skate park near you………. stay the hell out f his way, he rides too fast and is packing heat in his waistband and aint affraid pop a cap .

HAPPY NEW BEER!!!!!

December 30th, 2011 by Tom

Ok ok, my new years resolution may or may not be to cut out the cheesy and horrible blog post tittles. Yes the tittle sucks but I feel it is appropriate considering the wacky year we have had.

Couldnt resist this one…….. sorry.

2011 has been an emotional journey, and we have seen many great times. Once again I was fortunate enough to spend most of the year working alongside two amazing dudes.

Dave Cee, what can I say, what a dude…….. a legendary one at that. Dave had a 3 month long dream holiday over in the states this year at it wet his appetite to what the big wide world outside of King St has on offer. Needless to say he had amazing time. Dave has since moved on from his duties in the shop and is going on to bigger and much radder things. Love you Dave, your contribution to the shop has been amazing and I cant thank you enough. Here is to many rad sessions e will undoubtedly have in the future.

While Dave was off having the time of his life in the states, good old bot ill Herrmann stepped in to fill Daves boots for a while. I first met Will whist in the UK last year. We actually met in Wales of all places, whilst attending all around legendary dude, Toby Fortes stag do. Just before Dave went away, Will appeared in town and the rest as they say is radical. Will is currently trekking about in New Zealand, surfing, riding, hiking and generally having himself a great time. Will played a major role in keeping me psyched on life and keeping the shop looking and felling good. We hope that he will return to our shores one day so we can go down to the Hero Of Waterloo on a Sunday evening for some pints and dancing to the amazing live Irish music. Get on Willis!

I will be having a few days off so this will be the official last post of the year. We will be closed for the 31st through to the 4th of January. For me and Hell On Wheels I would like to thank each and every one of you fine folks out there for making 2011 the amazing year that it was. See you all in the future, Im off to watch a very well named DVD about stock car racing back in the day. YEEWWWWWWW!!!!!!

GAP WEEK!

December 29th, 2011 by Tom

Once again I find myself at that awkward time of year between the mad rush of Christmas and the wild parties of New Years Eve. It is a strange time in the bike shop world as the shop is looking a little on the bare side and the distributors are not yet re open for business until the new year is in. So the shop is looking a little empty and there is no way of filling it for a couple of weeks. The shop has still been fairly busy and I have not been short of things to do, so I will leave you with 3 pictures from happenings in the shop today and a few words to accompany those pictures.

Always at Christmas time the cheaper K-Mart style bikes start to roll through the shop for minor tuning and re building. Every one of these bikes has the same disclaimer type sicker on them and it makes me giggle every time. Ah………………. Stunting, one of my favourite words. STUNTING!!!!!

As always, I was quite excited to receive my big brown envelope filled with Brittish BMXs finest words and photographs. The Albion always goes down smooth. On the topic of going down smooth, legendary friends of Hell on Wheels Timmy & Brigitta gave me a tasty little Christmas present to sip on while relaxing and reading some of the good yarns the Albion has on offer. Cheers guys!

The time finally came to tear down Wills shop window masterpiece and to start fresh with a new theme. This time we have a little bike of a BMX and Skate history lesson/ museum type of thing going on. The window is damn near impossible to get a good picture of so you will just have to pop in and see for yourself!
That is all the blogging I can handle for today, see you of the morrow.

MERRY CRIMBO EVERYBODY!

BIKES OF THE WEEK

December 24th, 2011 by Tom

I know that when a bike is worthy of the fabled Hell On Wheels bike of the week, It is generally a prize awarded to the best bike and that bike alone. This week however we have 3 bikes of the week. Hey dont yell, it is Christmas after all.

First up is up and coming Five Dock ruler Jono and his sweet new Proper TTL. Jono has recently officially become a man by breaking is first frame. Nice one bud, we are proud of you! So on the eve of the eve of Christmas Jono poped down for a fresh new steed. Aint she pretty as a picture.

Here is to many happy shred sessions Jonno. See you at the dock!

Our next bikes of the week are of the big wheeled variety. Legends of the inner-west BMX community Lee Lee Cruickshank, and Rhyme master reverend Rabbi, decided they were sick of trying to ride their little brakeless freedom machines across our fair city, so some larger wheels were needed. Keeping it BMX was an important thing for these guys so the natural choice was a tasteful Focale 44 running a freewheel and just a rear brake……….ooooooh yeah!

Look out for these fly funboys to be smashing through city traffic on a regular basis.

Rhyme master reverend Rabbi was quoted to say that from here on in he is all about speed, hot nasty badass speed! Look out for the 2016 Olympic velodrome team to include this cheeky little speed demon.

THE FUTURE IS NOW

December 22nd, 2011 by Tom

Just when I thought that the world of BMX web videos had gotten a bit on the stale and generic side, I somehow get my mind blown and my love of riding re booted by another BMX web video. What? Who would of thaught. But not just anybody out there could create a modern web video filled with modern street riding that would get me, a grumpy park and trail rat excited. That person is non other than our bud John Young. All I can really say is this video flat out rules and is all the inspiration you need to get out there on your bike. To see John grow into the talented man he is over the years has been really rad and I am so proud of the little bugger for how he has perfected his creative outlet. Get on John! Enjoy!

Look out for Hell On Wheels to be stocking Afray goodies in the new year.

THE LONG & SHORT OF IT.

December 21st, 2011 by admin

Allright now! It has been a while since my last horrible blog post tittle, but there you have it folks, they have returned.

As if all of last weeks deliveries were not last minute enough, we just got a whole stack more skate stuff through the door today. It may be last minute, but it is all worth the wait. Some boards are long , some are short….. see what I did with the tittle now…… say cheese.

First up for all you lovers of fantastical plastic, we have something extra special. The new clear cruisers from Diamond Flex are freakin cool and they only cost $145! Not a bad score for your stocking.

Drifters have always been known for thier colourful tastes in car decorations, and these new Drifter boards are no different. Bright colours and big wheels. The shorties run at a lush $169 and the long boy goes for $199….. not bad

The good folks at Gold Coast keep on churning out the good stuff, this time a slightly more substantial sized sidewalk surfer named Salvo. These quality planks will set you back $210.

I was not lying when I told you last week that we would be getting more colours in the radical Gold Coast Whizz range in very soon, and here they are. Lovingly nicknamed the Red Rocket this baddie could be yours for the now reduced price of $159!!!!
